Shallow depth of field is one of many effects that a photographer can use, but for me it is the way I experience the world. My vision is permanently blurred due retinas scars caused by Presumed Ocular Histoplasmosis Syndrome. In this series the viewer is given a glimpse into my restricted world with damaged retinas, each image is a split between normal vision and mine, which is missing the depth that makes everyone else’s world complete and safe. This is my view of Amsterdam

Visit to Maastricht on the 14th to 16th October 2022, in combination with RPS Benelux and the VIEWFinders club of Brussels.

My eyes are the window of my soul; it’s in anguish as I view Amsterdam. Sadly, my eyesight is failing due to Presumed Ocular Histoplasmosis Syndrome, a retina disease that can cause abnormal blood vessels (CNV). These damage the retina, effecting my vision and continues to do so until stopped. I am fearful for the future; My own ‘lenses’ are fading away; my current vision, is blurred and distorted. These photos are about what I see, I don’t see and possibly I won’t see Years of stability, brings unwarranted complacency, my camera helps me visualize what may happen. Bringing awareness of growing progressive deteriorations (distortion, blurriness, dulling colours, random specks and large central blind spot), affecting my mental health, fears, uncertainly and dread. These images are to help me understand what is to come. Can I figure it out for myself and in doing so, thus help others. Changes in my vision, immediately call the hospital, my panel shows what happens if I don’t.
